About Music of Hope and Remembrance

Commemorating an Artistic Uprising 75 years ago and Celebrating the human spirit through music and art.

Voices of Naples will share songs that tell the story of the spiritual resistance that took place at the Theresienstadt concentration camp.

Through hunger, disease, and slave labor, the Jewish inmates of Theresienstadt held onto their humanity by staging plays, composing opera and using paper and ink to record the horrors around them.

Led by imprisoned conductor Rafael Schächter, the inmates of Theresienstadt fought back with art and music. Schachter’s choir’s performance of Verdi’s Requiem on June 23, 1944 for the Red Cross visit has been called the Defiant Requiem.

This year, the Museum commemorates the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. We invite you to participate in our full schedule of activities in the coming months based on our theme, Butterflies of Hope and Remembrance.
