The History of Rwanda in Ten Pictures

“The History of Rwanda in Ten Pictures” exhibit is a traveling exhibit on loan from the Peace Center for Forgiveness and Reconciliation (PCFR) in Indianapolis, whose founder, Kizito Kalima, survived the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. The Center’s mission is to educate the public about Genocide Awareness and Prevention and offer Peace Rebuilding Projects for Youth and Adults. We were honored to have Mr. Kalima visit our Museum and speak at our recent Triumph 2022 event, along with Lieutenant-General (ret) The Honorable Roméo A. Dallaire who, as the Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Missions in Rwanda (UNAMIR), warned the world about the impending 1994 genocide and remained in the country to protect those who sought refuge with UN troops.

The exhibit uses photographs, documents, and cultural artifacts to explain the history of Rwanda. It describes how Rwandan society was divided while under colonial rule. These divisions continued to exist after the country received its independence, eventually leading to the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi people. The exhibit also tells how Rwanda has focused attention on reconciliation efforts following the genocide.

Kizito Kalima was inspired and encouraged to develop his Peace Center for Forgiveness and Reconciliation by the late Holocaust Survivor Eva Moses Kor, who founded the Candles Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Terre Haute, IN.
